Why commercial solar makes sense in QC right now
Commercial and industrial properties in Metro Manila pay some of the highest electricity rates in Southeast Asia, and Quezon City receives 4.8-5.2 peak sun hours per day year-round — one of the best solar resource profiles in the region. That combination means most commercial rooftop solar systems in QC pay for themselves in 3-6 years, faster than almost any other capex investment a small or medium business can make.
The additional strategic value is rate hedging. Meralco rates have trended upward for over a decade with periodic sharp adjustments. A solar system fixes your daytime electricity cost at the price of the system amortized over 25 years — regardless of what fuel or grid prices do in the meantime.
What commercial solar looks like in QC
Under Meralco’s Net-Metering Program, systems up to 100 kW qualify for net-metering treatment where excess daytime generation is credited against consumption at night. Above 100 kW, projects move into program-of-net-metering or renewable energy service contracts — we handle both.
For a typical QC business — a mid-sized office, restaurant, retail store, warehouse, or clinic — the system size usually falls in one of three buckets:
10-25 kWp: small offices, retail units, clinics, restaurants — offsets ₱30,000 to ₱75,000 monthly bills
25-75 kWp: medium warehouses, larger restaurants, church properties, small manufacturing — offsets ₱75,000 to ₱225,000 monthly bills
75-500 kWp: large warehouses, commercial complexes, condominium common areas, larger manufacturing — offsets ₱225,000+ monthly bills
What’s included in a commercial installation
- Detailed load and consumption analysis (12+ months of Meralco data)
- Roof structural engineering assessment and load calculation
- System design with three-phase inverter configuration
- Tier-1 monocrystalline modules with 25-year performance warranty
- Commercial-grade string or central inverters (SMA, Sungrow, Huawei class)
- SCADA / monitoring platform with production, consumption, and export tracking
- QC LGU building permit and Fire Code compliance
- DOE Certificate of Endorsement (for systems requiring it)
- Meralco DIS, PSA study where applicable, and net-metering interconnection agreement
- Structural, electrical, and workmanship warranties
- Optional: annual cleaning and inspection contract
Rooftop, ground-mount, or carport?
Most QC commercial installations are rooftop because it uses existing space and requires no additional land cost. But we also design ground-mount arrays for properties with unused lot space and solar carports for parking areas — the latter is popular for showrooms, restaurants with parking lots, and office buildings that want both energy production and shaded parking.
Solar carports have a longer payback than rooftop (structural cost is higher) but they generate additional value: parking-lot heat reduction, EV charger integration potential, and customer-facing sustainability visibility.
Commercial solar timeline and permitting
- Weeks 1-2: Site survey, load study, proposal
- Weeks 2-4: Structural engineering, detailed design, permit prep
- Weeks 4-8: QC LGU building permit, Fire Code clearance, Meralco DIS application
- Weeks 8-12: Installation on-site (typically 1-4 weeks depending on system size)
- Weeks 12-16: Meralco commissioning, bi-directional meter, net-metering agreement
- Full commercial timeline: 3-6 months from signed contract to switch-on
Frequently Asked Questions
Can our business claim tax incentives for solar?
Yes, several are available. The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 grants income tax holidays, VAT exemptions, and duty-free import treatment for RE projects registered with DOE. Businesses can also depreciate the solar equipment for tax purposes. We coordinate with your accountant to structure the project so eligible incentives are captured.
What happens to our operations during installation?
For rooftop installations we typically work outside of business hours or during weekends to minimize disruption. The tie-in switch-over from grid-only to solar-plus-grid takes about 4-8 hours and is scheduled at your convenience. Your normal Meralco service continues throughout construction until final tie-in.
Do we need to reinforce our roof?
Depends on your existing roof structural capacity. Modern QC commercial buildings usually have plenty of margin; older warehouses sometimes need spot reinforcement. Our engineering assessment identifies this early — if reinforcement is needed, it’s factored into the proposal, not a surprise mid-installation.
What about brownouts and grid failures? Does our business keep running?
A standard grid-tied system shuts down during a Meralco outage (safety-mandated anti-islanding). If uptime matters, we install hybrid systems with battery backup and/or generator-solar-grid controllers. For most QC commercial properties, we recommend at least a small battery bank sized to keep critical loads (POS, refrigeration, servers, lighting) running through typical brownout durations.
How does net-metering credit work for a business account?
Under Meralco Net-Metering, excess kWh exported to the grid during the day is credited to your account at the applicable time-of-use generation charge. Credits carry over month to month within the billing year. For businesses with predictable daytime consumption, well-sized systems can zero out the entire generation portion of the bill, leaving only Meralco’s fixed and demand charges.
